Ho-Chiao (Rick) Chuang is currently a Ph.D. student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Colorado-Boulder. He received his B.S in Department of Mechanical Engineering at Da-Yeh University, Taiwan in 2000 and received his M.S. in Department of Power Mechanical Engineering at National Tsing-Hua University, Taiwan, in 2002. His master thesis is focused on the" Investigation of Lapping Characteristics for Improving the Form Error of an Aspheric Lens".

Currently, he is working on the tunable external cavity diode lasers with volume holographic grating (VHG) for atomic physics purpose. He is trying to develop a whole new method for constructing a smaller extended-cavity diode laser by use of a volume holographic grating particularly smaller, inexpensive, mechanical, thermal stable and easy to build. Most of the laser components are based on simple modifications of a few commercial optical and mechanical components but with a specific silicon flexure design made by micro-fabrication technology for the laser frequency tuning.
