Mike Simon received his BA in biology from Temple University (Philadelphia, PA) in 1999. Since March of 2000, Mike has been a full-time employee at the Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company (LMSSC) Waterton facility in Littleton, CO. Mike has held a variety of positions beginning as a Multimedia Engineer and with the completion of his MS in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Denver (Denver, CO) in 2004 transitioned to the position of Senior Software Engineer. Mr. Simon supports a number of LMSSC programs by conducting systems and software engineering research. As a result of his diverse background, Mike spends the majority of his time engaged in the creative side of engineering executing concept studies and supporting new business activities within the Surveillance Systems group. Mr. Simon joined the University of Colorado MEMS group as a part-time graduate student in 2005 to pursue a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering with a MEMS focus. Mike’s research interests include: MEMS enabled remote-sensing systems, scientific and engineering visualization, and quantum information science and technology.

Currently, Mike is working on one project - a CU and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) collaboration to develop a Micro Cryogenic Cooler for Terahertz Imagers for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Dr. Yung-Cheng Lee is the project principal investigator. Mr. Simon is tasked with the design, engineering, integration, and test of the MEMS compressor subsystem.
